Your body consists of almost 60%-75% water, which is balanced by the cellular activities. When there is an imbalance in this balancing act, your tissues may retain 100% water to make you feel bloated, heavy and uncomfortable. It can contribute to weight gain and leave you frustrated both physically and mentally. If you are experiencing swollen legs, puffy hands, a bear belly and a lousy mood, you are definitely facing water retention.
What are the causes of water retention?
Water retention or edema is mainly caused because of dietary disorders. If you are taking excess salt in your food, the quantity of sodium in your body would increase. Too much sodium makes your blood saltier and your cells require more water to dilute it, so that you become thirsty and drink water in great amounts.
Similarly, the intake of too much sugar could shoot up the insulin hormone, which makes it difficult to wash out sodium. How to prevent water retention?
Start taking a balanced diet consisting of lots of fibers, fruits and vegetables. Fruits like berries, bananas, apples, tomatoes and grapefruits have a special ingredient that stops blood vessels from leaking into the spaces in between the body tissues. Eating green leafy vegetables like broccoli, peas, celery, beans, eggplants and onions in raw or steamed form can help you as well.
You should increase the intake of protein and cut back on sodium intake. Using substitutes for salt and sugar and taking spices like peppermint, ginger, parsley, garlic and anise are great solutions to water retention.
