How to Get Rid of Rats?
Rats can be very troublesome as pests. They can gnaw through your pipes, walls, electrical wires wreaking havoc. They chew off anything that comes their way. Also, they carry of a host of dangerous pathogens and germs. There are many varieties of rats, the most common being roof rats, Norway rats and house mice.
To get rid of these furry rodents, follow the methods given below.
Elimination of Sources of Infestation
Start with looking for the signs of the presence of rats. Look out for dirty smudges, urine dribbles, feces, gnawing damage and holes. Block the entry holes with paper and check it the next day to see if it has been disturbed. Mark on the locations on paper. This will act as a map for you.
Removal of Food Sources:
Rats eat almost everything. All the food matters should be stored in metal containers and should be tight lidded. Pet food should be covered properly and fruits and other perishable items should be kept in the refrigerator. It is better to use metal cans and any organic matter should not be thrown into it. The organic waste should be properly disposed off. Bird feeders and all other utensils should be properly cleaned.
Eradication of Cover:
Fill all the indicators of rats, from the map which you have been preparing. Clutter invites rats, so do keep a check on it.
Blocking the Methods of Entry:
To block the entry points, use a mixture of glass and mortar. Also, aluminum or steel plating can be used. All the open drains should be secured with metal screens.
Eradication:
After removing the favorable conditions for rat population, it is time to eradicate it. You can use rat traps. They are of various types like wooden snap traps, glue boards, zapper traps. The other methods are Ultrasonic devices and poisons. Rat predators can also prove to be useful.
