How to get rid of Menstrual Cramps?

A menstrual cramp is distinctly different from normal stomachaches. It usually comes back routinely once in every month during the time of the periods. There is nothing to panic about getting abdominal cramps because these occur naturally due to hormonal fluctuations that give way to spasms in the uterus.

Types of menstrual cramps

The menstrual cramps, also known as primary dysmenorrhea become intense when there is an increase in the fluctuating hormones prostaglandins. These give rise to unbearably painful periods, called secondary dysmenorrhea, which is often the pointer of some greater health problem. If the normal treatments for primary dysmenorrhea are not working for you, consult your doctor about the possibility of secondary dysmenorrheal.

Common symptoms of menstrual cramps

Normal menstrual cramps could be accompanied by symptoms like a throbbing, biting pain in your lower abdomen, thighs and back. Profuse seating, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness and vomiting are also some symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea. However, suffering from excessive and intolerable menstrual cramps could be a pointer to secondary dysmenorrheal or complications of the uterus and pelvic zone.

Basic medical aids to get relief from menstrual cramps

Taking an OTC pain killer like aspirin, Pamprin or Midol is the first thing you could do to get rid of the pain. Sometimes doctors prescribe oral contraceptive to lower the production of uterine liningand prostaglandins, changing the normal menstrual cycle. Instead, you could try taking a heat compress on the cramped area to get some relief. A hot bath, heating pads or a warm wet towel, all could work equally for reducing the cramps.

Some tips to counter menstrual cramps

Doing a light cardio or yoga could increase blood circulation, relax the stiffened muscles causing cramps and increase the endorphin levels to bring in a sense of comfort. Keep yourself hydrated during periods by drinking lots of water. Herbal teas prepared with mint, gingerroot or hot chamomile also help.
