The Guidance for Foot Drop

Foot Drop is a problem where a person has difficulty in lifting the front part of the foot. With the problem of Foot Drop, a patient is unable to lift the toes upward and have difficulty to raise the front part of your foot when walking.

Some Causes of Foot Drop

  • The common cause for foot drop is definitely an injury to the peroneal nerve near the top of the leg behind the knee.
  • Many times, Foot Drop can be brought on by an adverse reaction to drugs, or some times by alcohol. During chemotherapy in cancer patients some drugs have been known to cause temporary Foot Drop.
  • The other causes of foot drop involve multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and muscular dystrophy.

Remedies or Treatment for Foot Drop

Physical Therapy for Foot Drop Treatment

Specialized physical therapy for foot drop may include gait training that essentially teaches the patient that how to walk all over again. Specific exercises also may simply be advised to help the affected muscles.

AFO Treatment

An AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) is a common solution to treating Foot Drop. An AFO is a device that is inserted into the patient's shoe and is designed to help the patient's ankle and foot to achieve stability during movement. This helps to correct the awkward gaits similar to a brace or a splint, an AFO is good treatment that fitted to a patient's foot to achieve the best results.

Non-Surgical Foot Drop Treatments

Vertebral Fractures.

Nearly half of all vertebral fractures occur without any significant back pain. If pain medication, progressive activity, or support does not help with the fracture, two minimally invasive procedures - vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty may be options.

Herniated disc

In cases where a bulging or herniated disc is found to be causing the foot drop, physical therapy and fluoroscopically guided epidural steroid injections may be appropriate. In cases that do not respond to more conservative measures then the disc may need to be surgically removed to take the pressure off the nerve.

Blanket Lifters

A blanket lifter is the accessory that is designed to keep a blanket off of the toes and feet while a patient is sleeping. This help to relieve unnecessary pressure on the foot and ankle joint. This is very important for a patient following surgery for Foot Drop. Blanket lifters come designed for regular beds and hospital beds, and are sometimes referred to as a bed cradle.


The main goal of surgery when there is nerve damage is to achieve continuity of the nerves. The surgeon could either repair or remove the injured part.

Prevention of Foot Drop

If you think you are going to have Foot Drop then try to walk on the heels of your feet for a short distance. If you are experiencing a case of Foot Drop then you will be unable to walk on the heel of the foot with the problem.
