How to get rid of Dust Mites?

How harmful are dust mites?

Domestic house mites are microscopic eight-legged creatures. Ordinarily, they are not considered very harmful. However, these bluish white are often responsible for health conditions like wheezing, sneezing, chest congestion, skin rash, eczema, watery eyes, itching and even asthma.

Although the male dust mites survive only for 2-3 weeks, the females can make it up to 80 days, during which period they can lay almost 100 eggs. Since dust mites thrive on dead skin flakes and cells, the rapid growth in their population can worsen the threat of allergic skin reactions through inhaling their excreta.

Basic precautions to keep away dust mites

The best way to avoid dust mite infestation is to be meticulously clean about your house. Be regular with dusting interiors, particularly bedding, carpet, fan blades, stuffed toys, picture frames, floors, shelves and every corner of your house where dust might get accumulated. Using plastic bags and mattress pads, zipped pillow covers can protect your beddings from dust mite infestations.

A weekly washing of the bedding materials in water heated up to 130 degree Celsius will eliminate dust mites and wash away their feces. Substituting wool blankets and feather pillows with those made of synthetic material like foam and vellux can make your bedding suitable for laundry.  Since dust mites often settle in the fur of your pets, it is better to make separate beds for them.

Instead of sweeping the floors, get them vacuumed and mopped. If possible, remove carpets and select easy to clean flooring materials like laminate, linoleum or wood. Since dust mites prefer warm and humid surroundings, you can start by keeping your interiors cool. In winters lower your thermostats to 70 degrees and use air conditioners in summers. This helps to lower temperature and bring down humidity below 35%.
