Hyperhidrosis Information and Remedies

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is an excessive sweating which may be localized or generalized, physiological or pathological, transient or permanent. Besides being uncomfortable, hyperhidrosis may interfere with social and occupational activities. Furthermore, exaggerated sweating predisposes to maceration of the skin, growth of fungus (dermatophytes monilia and microsporon furfur), miliaria, intertrigo, secondary dermatitis, contact eczema and keratoderma.


Causes of Hyperhidrosis

1. Physiological

    Exertion, emotional embarrassment.
    High atmospheric temperature combined with humidity.
    Drugs like pilocarpine.
2. Pathological

    Fevers like malaria.
    Shock-cold, clammy sweats.
    Endocrine-thyrotoxicosis, acromegaly.
    Debility and wasting disease (diabetes, tuberculosis).

3. Hereditary, autonomic imbalance, emotional stresses, neurasthenia, local deformity e.g., flat feet; Sense of Heat (SOH), excessive use of alcohol and tea

Treatment of Hyperhidrosis

Treatment consist in:
1. Improving the general, physical and mental health of the patient; also of cutting down hot spicy food, tea, alcohol and tobacco.
2. Pro-banthine for severe cases of hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet.
3. Wiping the skin dry as often as permissible.
4. Deodorants or ammonium chloride solution 25 per cent for topical use in the axillae.
