Role of Hair Cuticle

Cuticle: The outside horny layers is composed of transparent, overlapping, protective scale-like cells, towards the hair ends.

The cuticle protects the inner structure of the hair. Chemical relaxers, hair color and permanent wave solution enter the hair cortex raising the scales on the cuticle.

Other layer of hair other than cuticle

2. Cortex: The middle or inner layer, which gives strength and elasticity to the hair.

The layer contains pigments that give the hair its color.

Cortex is made up of a fibrous substance formed by elongated cells.

3. Medulla: The inner-most layer is referred to as the pith, or marrow of the hair shaft and is composed of round cells.

Sometimes, the medulla doesn't exist in very fine hair.
