Fashion Trends in the 70s



 

Variety of changes in fashion world occurs in years 1970s. Flouncy skirts, embroidered short tops, scarves and large size jewelry are main fashion styles of 70s. Punk fashion style was developed in this era only.


1970’s clothes

In early 1970’s sloppy hippie look of 60s was famous and then it moved to disco clothing. Bell bottom jeans and trousers, tie dye shirts were famous in those days. Tight shirt with big collars and having dark prints were popular in men. During 1970s three types of skirts such as mini (short length), midi (mid-calf length) and maxi (full length) skirts were seen but in the early 70s mini skirt was popular among the female. Jeans were much more popular in both men and women for daily wear. For formal occasions men’s wore suit and fashionable tie. Women preferred long dresses having bright color and floppy hat.

Other Fashion Trends of 1970s

  • Jewelry-large pieces of jewelry and dark colored scarves could be seen in 70s.
  • Hair-Women had long hair and central parting in that era. In men long hair and beards were fashionable.
  • Shoes-Platform shoes were seen in year of 1972. It was more popular in female than male. Sole of platform shoes was 2-4 inches thick which causes back pain in later life. Same time clogs were also popular.
  • Fabrics-Both synthetic as well as natural fibers were used. Courtelle, trevira, satinised polyesters, cotton or viscose rayon fabrics were used in 70s for designing dresses.

Top Fashion Designers of 70s

Yves St Laurent, Ossie Clark, and Zandra Rhodes are responsible for creating new fashion design. Givenchy, Norell, and Oscar de la Renta were also famous designer. Effect of television and film was also seen in 70s. Movies such as Annie Hall and Saturday Night Fever were popularized for Disco fashion.

Punk Fashion in 70s

Original Punk look was created by Vivian Westwood and partner Malcolm McLaren. Torn and dull dresses or jackets along with spiked hair which was dyed in dark colors, bright make up and pins in earrings and nose were part of punk style.
